Taizé Candlelight Prayer Service

On Wednesday, April  12 at 7:00 p.m., St. Michael’s will be offering Taizé Candlelight Prayer as a moment of meditation before the drama on the Triduum.

You may not be familiar with Taizé Prayer, but you have already sung some of its music.  Our Burgundy Book contains “Eat This Bread” and “Jesus, Remember Me,” and some weeks ago the choir sang “In The Lord I’ll Be Ever Thankful,”  all Taizé standards.  This form of prayer service was developed in the ecumenical religious community in Taizé, France.  That community was founded at the end of World War II by a group of men who felt called to serve others and bring all Christians together.  Today thousands of young people from all Christian traditions visit the community each summer, praying together for peace and Christian unity.

Taizé music is easily learned.  It is sung repetitively, inviting you to meditate on the meaning of short phrases, accompanied by various instruments.  There are also readings and prayers, acclamations, and a period of silence.  The church will be lit largely by candlelight, and you will have an opportunity to offer your own prayers before the altar.
