As a visitor, you will find St. Michael’s to be a friendly and diverse Christian community. Our regular Sunday worship follows the Book of Common Prayer, which unites Episcopalians around the world in common worship, and brings our deep tradition to life every week. Roman Catholics will find our services familiar, and those who come from other faiths will find a home church rich in spirituality, tradition, concern for our neighbor, and a deep connection with God.
Our website will give you the most up-to-date information about our parish. As you visit our site, you will get a feeling or sense about who we are and what we do. You will find that we are a very active parish with many spiritual, educational and just plain fun activities for you to participate. After checking out the website please come and visit. St. Michael’s looks forward to giving you a warm welcome, and please know that there is a place for you and your family within our congregation. You will find our congregation is filled with people of all different occupations and interests, just like you. It is with great joy that we welcome all worshipers!
When you do come, you may let the greeters or ushers know that you are visiting. They will assist you with signing our guest registry, and don’t be concerned about being asked to stand up, or to sit in a certain place within the nave, or, to wear a name tag, because that just won’t happen. You can blend in with the rest of the congregation and feel comfortable.
After the service, please join us for coffee and fellowship in our Community Room, which is located at the far end of the hallway as you exit from the side entrance of the nave. Not ready to participate, we understand, and hope that you will come back again for another visit. And before you leave, please take a BLUE WELCOME BAG located at all our exterior doors. Our gift to you for visiting and worshipping at St. Michael's.
If you have young children, there is a nursery located downstairs for children from birth to three years old. There is also a “soft space” located just down the hall, where your toddler may romp around as you view the live streaming service on TV. All of our Family Ministries staff are certified in the course, “Keeping God’s People Safe.” We are committed to caring for our youth in a very loving, caring and safe environment. We offer workshops throughout the year and encourage those who are interested in diving deeper into their faith to attend these classes. These classes are listed under Events on this site, or, in The eSword Newsletter, as they become available.
At St. Michael’s you will join with a congregation who celebrates a liturgy that is full of tradition and spirituality. The people are very welcoming and friendly to all people of all ages.
St. Michael’s is located on the corner of Hillside and Dundee in Barrington, IL.
Well, what are you wearing? We encourage people to dress comfortably. For some, that may mean dressing up, but for most it simply means wearing casual clothes.
We love your kids, and like you, we want them to have the best worship experience possible. We believe this experience is with our Church School on Sunday mornings. There they will have the opportunity to worship and learn God’s Word in a way they can relate to and understand. This also frees you up to worship without any distractions.
When we celebrate the Eucharist, which is every Sunday morning at both services, we share the bread and wine for Holy Communion. If the Eucharist is celebrated during the weekday, or at any other time, the bread and wine is always given for Holy Communion. If you do not wish to receive the wine, crossing your arms over your chest informs the chalice bearer that you do not wish to receive the wine. Receiving Holy Communion is an integral part of our service.
As Episcopalians we believe in giving of ourselves through time, talent and treasure. We naturally accept offerings and/or pledges to support our parish and our work in the community and beyond. You can make your offering or pledge online through our website, if you choose.
We will never ask you to stand up and introduce yourself. You will be able to attend our service and sit wherever you choose. We hope though, that you will inform a greeter or usher that this is your first visit, so that they can assist you and answer any question you may have. We invite you to come to the Community Room for coffee after the service to meet some of our parishioners in a casual setting. If you cannot stay, we understand, but hope that you will return and visit us again.
Our Rite I service at 8 am is a more traditional service with little music. Our Rite II service at 10 am includes music with full choir(s) and incense (only during high holy days).
